The proximal augmented Lagrangian method for nonsmooth composite optimization

چکیده
We study a class of optimization problems in which the objective function is given by the sum of a differentiable but possibly nonconvex component and a nondifferentiable convex regularization term. We introduce an auxiliary variable to separate the objective function components and utilize the Moreau envelope of the regularization term to derive the proximal augmented Lagrangian – a continuously differentiable function obtained by constraining the augmented Lagrangian to the manifold that corresponds to the explicit minimization over the variable in the nonsmooth term. This function is used to develop customized algorithms based on the method of multipliers (MM) and a primaldescent dual-ascent gradient method in order to compute optimal primaldual pairs. Our customized MM algorithm is applicable to a broader class of problems than proximal gradient methods and it has stronger convergence guarantees and a more refined step-size update rules than the alternating direction method of multipliers. These features make it an attractive option for solving structured optimal control problems. When the differentiable component of the objective function is (strongly) convex and the regularization term is convex, we prove (exponential) asymptotic convergence of the primal-descent dual-ascent algorithm. Finally, we solve the edge addition in directed consensus networks and optimal placement problems to demonstrate the merits and the effectiveness of our approach.

A second order primal-dual method for nonsmooth convex composite optimization
We develop a second order primal-dual method for optimization problems in which the objective function is given by the sum of a strongly convex twice differentiable term and a possibly nondifferentiable convex regularizer. After introducing an auxiliary variable, we utilize the proximal operator of the nonsmooth regularizer to transform the associated augmented Lagrangian into a function that i...
متن کاملOn the non-ergodic convergence rate of an inexact augmented Lagrangian framework for composite convex programming
In this paper, we consider the linearly constrained composite convex optimization problem, whose objective is a sum of a smooth function and a possibly nonsmooth function. We propose an inexact augmented Lagrangian (IAL) framework for solving the problem. The proposed IAL framework requires solving the augmented Lagrangian (AL) subproblem at each iteration less accurately than most of the exist...
متن کاملA smoothing augmented Lagrangian method for solving simple bilevel programs
In this paper, we design a numerical algorithm for solving a simple bilevel program where the lower level program is a nonconvex minimization problem with a convex set constraint. We propose to solve a combined problem where the first order condition and the value function are both present in the constraints. Since the value function is in general nonsmooth, the combined problem is in general a...
متن کاملFrame-based Poisson image restoration using a proximal linearized alternating direction method
The restoration problem for Poissonian images, arising in medical and astronomical applications, is an active research area. The associated optimization models are quite challenging since the fidelity term of the problem is not a quadratic function and the regularizer is usually nonsmooth. Recently, the augmented Lagrangian-based alternating direction method has been proposed to solve the total...
متن کاملSmoothing augmented Lagrangian method for nonsmooth constrained optimization problems
In this paper, we propose a smoothing augmented Lagrangian method for finding a stationary point of a nonsmooth and nonconvex optimization problem. We show that any accumulation point of the iteration sequence generated by the algorithm is a stationary point provided that the penalty parameters are bounded. Furthermore, we show that a weak version of the generalized Mangasarian Fromovitz constr...
